When 250 well armed and trained rebel tribesmen attacked the small SAS outpost at Mirbat few would have given good odds on their survival. At the height of the battle Corporal Labalaba and Trooper Savesaki, both Fijians and both wounded fought off relentless assaults by the attacking Adoo. Firing a World War II vintage 25pdr field gun at point blank range Labalaba finally fell to a snipers bullet just as Captain Kealy and Trooper Tobin reached the gunpit to aid its defence. Within minutes however Tobin was dead, but Kealy and the remaining defenders critical position was saved by the timely arrival of 2 Omani Strikemaster jets, and helicopters carrying 24 men of G Squadron.

45 Commando Royal Marines performed the role of the Belfast Roulement Battalion from 2nd July to 10th November 1986. This painting depicts a foot patrol setting out from Springfield Road RUC Station. The RUC Station at Springfield Road was 45 Commando's Tactical HQ. With its fortress-like protective fencing it stood cheek-by-jowl among little terraced houses. Marines escorted the constables of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) on their beat, both on foot and in Land Rovers. A sign warned: Do Not Stand Around In This Yard. Holes made by bullets and shrapnel from bombs tossed over the fence explained the reason why. In the painting I have tried to make the gate a symbolic focal point, as the men's thoughts are focussed upon what lies outside for this patrol.

Prince Rupert beginning his career as a leader of the Royalist Cavalry drove the Parliamentarian Cavalry off the field. Prince Rupert was a nephew of King Charles I and commanded the Royalist cavalry during the English Civil War. Prince Rupert was born on 17th December1619 in Prague. His mother was Elizabeth, the sister of Charles I. Rupert became a soldier and fought in the Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648) and in 1642, he joined the army of Charles I in the English Civil War. He was soon appointed to lead the royalist cavalry and fought in the first major battle of the war at Edgehill in October 1642. His cavalry charge completely routed the parliamentarians but he got carried away and pursued them too far from the battlefield, losing the chance to inflict a decisive defeat. His reputation grew after a number of military. In 1644 Prince Rupert led the spectacular relief of the siege of York but his army was defeated by a parliamentary army at Battle of Marston Moor, losing York and the north to Cromwell In June 1645 he took part in the Battle of Naseby at which the royalists were defeated. In September Rupert surrendered Bristol to parliament and in response the king abruptly withdrew his commission. Rupert left for exile in Holland. After the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Rupert held a series of British naval commands, fighting in the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch Wars. On 19th November 1682 Prince Rupert died.

The Savoia Marchetti SM.79s of the 281a Squadriglia were to become notorious for their daring attacks on allied shipping in the Mediterranean from their bases in Libya throughout 1940. Among the most celebrated of Italian pilots was Capitani Carlo Emanuele Buscaglia, seen here claiming another victim in his personal aircraft 281-5.

The only four engined heavy bomber to serve with the Regia Aeronautica, the Piaggio P.108 was built in too few numbers to have any significant effect in the Italian air campaign in World War Two, but was a worthy aircraft with several innovative design features, not least the remotely controlled gun barbettes in the outer engine nacelles. Most notable of the P.108's achievements were a number of daring night time raids on Gibraltar, as depicted here, flying from 274a Squadriglia's base at Decimomannu on Sardinia.

Designed in 1913 and constructed by the Russo-Baltic Carriage Factory in Riga, the Ilya Muromets was designed by the great Igor Sikorski, based on his earlier creation, the Bolshoi Baltiski. Conceived originally as a luxury passenger aircraft, it was to become the worlds first four-engined strategic bomber at the outbreak of World War 1 and featured a fully enclosed cabin for the pilots and internal bomb racks that could carry up to 800kg of bombs. 73 examples of this extremely successful aircraft were built and only one was lost due to enemy action during the 400 sorties flown, during which their bombing accuracy was claimed to have achieved a commendable 90 percent success rate.

The balance of maritime power in the Mediterranean was transformed at a stroke by the British air attack which disabled three Italian battleships in a few minutes. The target was the core of Mussolinis fleet, tucked away in Taranto Harbour, in southern Italy. The attack, codenamed Operation Judgement, took place in bright moonlight by twenty-one Swordfish from the British carrier HMS Illustrious. In the confined space of the harbour, their torpedoes had a devastating impact, at least nine torpedoes struck their targets. In all, seven ships were severely damaged, including the battleship Caio Duilio (left), Littorio (right) and Conte Di Cavour.
